Nirmala by Premchand Ji: The Summary Unveiled

Being the eldest among her four siblings, Nirmala’s father, Udayabhanulal, fixes her marriage. Udayabhanulal is a lawyer and is against dowry practice. The bridegroom’s family didn’t ask for a dowry because they hope to get it without asking. The wedding is one month away, and Udaybhanulal is killed. After the death of Nirmala’s father, her in-laws break up the relationship, as they feel that they will not get the dowry. 

Now, Nirmala is married to a 40-year-old widower named Totaram. In this way, her family saved themselves from the dowry. Nirmala pursues her duty, but she does not want intimacy with Totaram. She sees her father in Totaram. On the other hand, Totaram uses various tricks to increase his closeness to Nirmala. He has three sons from his first wife. The eldest son Mansaram is one year older than Nirmala.

Each morning, Totaram goes to the office, and Nirmala studies with Mansaram after finishing household chores. When Totaram comes to know about this, he started thinking that perhaps both of them are having an affair. Due to this doubt, he sent Mansaram to a hostel. It was a heartbroken incident for Mansaram. He leaves food in the hostel. Due to this, he suffers from the disease and dies in a short period. Totaram considers himself guilty of the death of Mansaram. Now, neither does he focus on work nor dare to talk to Nirmala about Mansaram.

Meanwhile, Nirmala gives birth to a baby girl. Totaram’s second son steals Nirmala’s jewelry, and Totaram registers a police complaint. His second son commits suicide due to fear of smeared and the police. A fake saint becomes successful in influencing Totaram’s third son to leave home. Totaram also leaves the house in the search of his son. After several days, when Totaram returns home with an empty hand, he found Nirmala’s dead body.

Surprisingly, even in today’s modern era, social evils such as dowry practice and child marriage persist in our society.
